Today we celebrate International Women’s Day with a focus on director Michelle Bishop. Wife to David and a proud mother of 2 young men – Jonathon aged 25 and James aged 27, Michelle has been with MGY for 32 years having first joined the company aged 24 as negotiator till 2002 when she moved into a new role as our founder Michael Young’s PA, eventually becoming a director of the company in 2016. A people person Michelle is organised, diligent with a “Can Do” attitude, and isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty often answering the phones and occasionally taking out the bins! Michelle is responsible for managing operations and HR.
Of women in business, Michelle admires The Apprentice’s – Karen Brady and her tough, no-nonsense approach, although her own leadership style differs choosing to employ a supportive approach to harness and develop the very best from our team of 31 staff. Michelle cites Michael Young as having the biggest influence in her career, working with him for a 26-year period. Michelle’s biggest career challenge was getting through the financial crisis back in 2007. Working alongside fellow directors Mark Iles and James Thomas, Michelle is developing MGY into a market leading, thriving business as an estate agency across residential and commercial, a strong lettings portfolio, along with operating as Chartered Surveyors, residential auctioneers and land developers enjoying consistent growth resulting in the launch of branch offices in Radyr, Cardiff Bay, acquiring the Pontcanna business in October 2021 and most recently a planned new branch office in Whitchurch Village opening Thursday 28 April.
Michelle switches off by spending time with family and enjoying long walks with friends around Roath Park Lake and Parc Cefn Onn. For any women looking to make a move into property or rise through the ranks into leadership, Michelle’s best advice is: “Grow your people handling skills, don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty and study the market to get a real understanding of how an estate agency business operates.”
At MGY we support the vision of a world where difference is valued and celebrated.
